Solved MS Word 2000 won't open or save documents

July 8, 2017 at 21:03:54
Specs: Windows 10
Word 2000 worked fine the first day on new computer with Windows 10. On the second day, Windows did some updates and then Word would not save changes to documents. I click save and then the close box. Then it asks me if I want to save changes before closing, I click yes and nothing happens. I click the close box again. It asks me if I want to save changes before closing. I click yes and nothing happens. This goes on until I click no, to not save changes, and only then does the document close, with changes not saved.

There is no Restore Point to undo the Windows updates.

Some advice I already found for this was to start Word in safe mode and then do something in an Options tab in the File menu, but that's for later versions of Word. Word 2000 has no Options tab in the File menu.

I ran Repair for Word in Uninstall Programs, but the problem persists. (There were 2 or 3 error messages during the Repair. At that stage I didn't write them down.) Does Office 2000 have some compatibility issues with Windows 10?

MS don't support Office 2000 on Windows 10 so there could be some incompatibility issue. Having said that sometimes oldies will just happen to run until there is something that changes which MS will not have taken into account. Right now I'm running Office 2003 on Win 10 (with the Creators Update) and it is fine but it might not last.

This freebie will also run on Win 10:

It is a 2016 version so it runs all the 2007 MS compressed files such as docx.

Things might well have changed but I once tried the old "Open Office" (now Apache). It was very slow and reacted badly to MS compressed files.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Seems there are compatibility issues with Word 2000 and Win-10.

and this video (apparently posted a couple of days ago) may be of interest:

I found all of the above using the search words (string)

Word 2000 Windows 10

in a google trawl. Perhaps repeat my trawl and see if there is anything else useful amongst the hits?

Thanks, trvir. I'm sorry to say, though, I followed that video and got the same Installation Successfully Completed message as in the video, but then still had the same problem with Word. My solution for the time being is to use the free month trial of Word 2016 that came on the new computer. So far it looks like I'll like it enough to buy it. I guess I'll keep trying some to make Word 2000 work in Windows 10, though, for my own use or to help someone else.

You might consider using Free Office/Offce Libre. It is, as the name suggests, free. It is compatible with Word doc (and I think docx too).

These links explain a "a little" more about it and other possible alternatives.

Fair to say that more than a few here are using Office Libre or similar...

You could still try uninstall and re-install Word 2000 if you haven't already.

Ideally run CCleaner after uninstall to remove remnants.

Uninstalling and Reinstalling Word 2000 is a good idea, but didn't help me in this case. I went ahead and bought Word 2016, pleased enough with the price and the newness of it after all these years with Word 2000. I'm still looking into this problem, though, and finding that people are having a variety of problems trying to run Word 2000 in Windows 10, for example

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/i...

And I thought of something that might be relevant, though I'm not enough of an expert to know how. I've been running Word 2000 just fine for about a year or two on Windows 10 upgraded from Windows 8, and only had a problem with Word 2000 on pure Windows 10. So I guess there some DLL or file in Windows 8 that works with Windows 10 but isn't in Windows 10 and which Word 2000 needs.

I appreciate all the responses, but I have to pick a Best Answer. I pick the one that most strongly states the incompatibility of Word 2000 and Windows 10.

Frequently an upgrade installation seems to allow earlier versions of some software to run in the new OS; even though it isn't fully (if at all) compatible with the new OS. Problem becomes more apparent with a clean install, as then some dlls etc. from the older OS (still present when doing an upgrade) will not be present - which is what you surmised earlier.
