xp/sp2 will not upgrade several programs

June 23, 2011 at 09:50:50
Specs: Windows XP, P4 2.4Ghz/1GB
failure to update programs in SP2 which include Office 2003, Java, Adobe Reader, and SP3. For some time downloaded upgrades fail to install with message "installer server could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or windows installer is not correctly installed". With Adobe it gives error 1601 and with Windows it gives error 0x80070641. The installer is running when I check it and it is version V3.01.4001.5512 and I am signed in as administrator. I tried to unregister it and re-register it to no avail.

I already tried that but when it got half way through the installation a pop up said "access denied" and then proceeded to reverse what it had already installed. All programs were closed and virus was disabled.

Download & install CCleaner-Slim. Run the cleaner & delete everything it finds. While you still have it open, click Tools, then Startup. There should be very few programs listed - antivirus, possiby firewall, sound, network. Anything else is probably unnecessary & could be part of the problem. Post the list.

I am not having much success and I believe that the Windows Installer has somehow slipped a cog according to Adobe Reader updater. How do I correct the Windows Installer? Should I install the newer version? If so, how do I delete the current one so it does not interfere with the new one and would the new one fail to install if I uninstalled the old one before downloading it? I am not that versed on the technical side of programming and do not want to screw up the rest of the computer functions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since the last postings I have tried everything and the installer is still corrupted for just three programs (Office 2003, adobe reader update, and Java update) so I am just going to pack it in. I have tried fix it programs, installing new installer (which won't install), and anything I have heard to try but nothing works so I will just leave this computer to the uploading my weather station to two different web sites and start using my Windows 7 notebook. Thank you for your suggestions.
