xp wont open need to save files

Specs: Windows 7
hi windows shuts down before it opens. daughters essay saved on computer and need to get it off. only got recovery media disk and frightened i will loose all her work. help please

Yes, the recovery disk will probably lose everything.

You could use a Linux Live CD. This runs from the CD only but it allows access to the HD in order for you to put your important files on a flash drive. I use Puppy Linux but there are many others around, such as Knoppix. You have to "Burn an image" on another computer, using the download (rather than putting the download onto the CD). You will need to ensure that the CD drive is seen before the HD on the faulty computer - go to BIOS. Everything is single click in Linux and drag and drop can be useful.

thanks for info. I got so frustrated with it I decided to put recovery disk in and loose all the work but laptop turned itself off before the disk had time to start working. I think it will need looking at by someone who knows about these things as I think a serious virus has stopped it working and i am out of my depth.
