XP to Vista upgrade question

I bought dvd copying software a long time ago and installed it on a laptop running XP. I would like to upgrade to Vista and eventually W7. To go from XP to Vista basic, I would have to do a clean install. My problem is that I don't know if after backing up this program I can successfully restore it to the next OS. I know how to do this but some programs do no allow you to reinstall the software more that once. If I can't reinstall it successfully I will not upgrade cause I don't want to lose the program. I have other computers with the W7, but I thought that if I could I would try. I don't have the name of the software in front of me,. Is there some way around this problem?

Why not just go to Win 7, Vista is garbage. When software says you can't install it more than once, it usually means you can't install it on multiple computers, but you can install it more than once on the same computer if you're installing a new OS.

You know, I did try first to go straight to W7, but installation halted and stated I couldn't go from XP to W7. I would rather skip Vista.

Delete all partitions & install Win7 from scratch.

Thanks guys, I did go back and check and saw I could do this clean install. I will look for a registration number for this software and/or contact this company and see how its possible to reinstall this dvd program.

There are any number of programs that can display the installation keys for your installed software if Windows is still working.

Magical Jelly Bean keyfinder, Belarc Advisor, are two.
