Hi folks I have had a problem with XP booting up without any icons or start bar just the background.
This means that I cannot do any thing and the computer just sits there.

So I have a couple of questions?

Is this a known virus or is it a consequence of no XP support?

What file controls the start bar and icon boot list?
What should it look like?

Anything I can do about it?

Many Thanks Folks D.

This issue crops up at times... There are assorted "fixes" for it; including a hot fix from M$-land - which was while ago of course...

But see if either of the two suggestion here resolve it?

And this link covers the same approach - but also offers a couple of other ideas too:

That is definitely not a consequence of lack of MS support and not the usual symptom of a virus. All that lack of MS support does is mean that you have little or nothing coming down their pipe to help security.

If all else fails and it was recent then you could use System Restore back to a date before it happened.

When you have sorted out your problem you may care to see these two which help XP security:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Sometimes rebuilding iconcache.db can fix icon problems. Some fellow named Derek posted this awhile ago:

Here's a fix someone found for that exact problem:
