I hope Tufenuf is out there today because his/her last advice worked very well for me.

My problem.

Recently a Microsoft tech person established a second user account on my computer.

In the old account, Start, Search works like always except there is no little dog.

The text:

What do you want to search for?
Documents etc.
All files etc.
Computers or etc.
Etc.

Click All files etc.
All or part etc.
A word or phrase etc.
Drive?
Etc.

All of this appears normally.

In the new account, the little dog is there but nothing else.

The text:

What do you want to search for?
Documents etc.
All files etc.
Computers or etc.
Etc.

Click
All files etc.
All or part etc.
A word or phrase etc.
Drive?
Etc.

This is all missing.

There is just a little dog on a blue field with nothing in it.

Can I fix this?

This is easy to do, and will not hurt you ---

Several dialog boxes are blank

Thank you for the reply.
I need specific instructions on exactly how to restore Search Companion.
Search Companion is mentioned once at the top of these instructions and never again.

But thanks for your thought.

jmdraft,

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf to open directly to the inf folder.

Why doesn't Search work?

Edited to add:

I would first try this which is referenced in the Microsoft link that Chuck 2 posted.

Method 1: Reregister Jscript.dll

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type or copy & paste:

regsvr32 jscript.dll

Click OK.

Note the space between the 2 and the j

Thank you Tufenuf,

I found two similar files:

One says srchasst and looks like a Word Pad.
The other says SRCHASST.PN F and has little gears on it.

Which one?

I have XP Professional on this Computer but at my present location I only have a copy of the XP Home CD.

Do you think the XP Home CD will work?

The file you want is the srchasst.inf file NOT the srchasst.PNF file.

"Do you think the XP Home CD will work?"

I don't think that will work but you can give it a try.

Did you first try this.

I had to abandon this problem for a couple days and now I want to try again.

I have two computers. On one of them the Search Companion works.

I though maybe I could copy srchasst.inf from the one that works.

I looked for srchasst.inf on both. On both computers there is srchasst but no srchasst.inf. The .inf is missing on both.

Several people suggest hotfix but I have been unable to find the Hot fix for this file.

Can someone tell me how to find the hotfix for srchasst.inf?

Curiously,

I copied all the missing files from a computer which works and put them in the computer with the problem.

And later, having gone through the steps suggested (thank you all), the Search Companion is restored in one user account on the problem computer each time I run “regsvr32 jscript.dll” but I must run it every time I reboot.

I can’t get it to work in the other user account.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about why this is so.
