XP Pro sp2 hangs at login tune

April 7, 2011 at 18:26:12
Specs: Windows XP
my desktop loads, then everything hangs (right after the windows login tune)... I can just manage to hit the Start menu key & see the menu, then it freezes.
No keyboard response, tho mouse moves (shows the hourglass when over the taskbar).

Trying to reach Safe Mode, hitting F8 key doesn't work. Only keys available are F2 for setup, F12 for boot device menu, .
Tried removing USB devices.

many thanks in advance

Put your XP cd in & reboot, do a repair install.

Repair XP
Sometimes a program, bad driver or conflicts that destroy or corrupt files will necessitate a reinstallation. WinXP will replace damaged or corrupted files without disturbing your data or registry settings so that these will still be available to you.

Thanks John. Problem is, it requires an Administrator password, and i haven't got one. I suppose I should follow the complex directions on this from Webtree or Edlergeek.
(fact is, i can now get onto the desktop, not sure why. Recovery Console didn't help, but now my only problem is USB mouse not being recognised...)
