XP operating System not booting.

August 16, 2011 at 05:00:39
Specs: Windows XP
I think it might be a virus, do to the warning I got before my PC rebooted by itself. I was on-line, yes I have virus protection. I have talked to some people I one of them thinks it might have been a virus I got through the search engine I was using. OK so it starts to boot gets to the black screen before the Windows load screen then goes back to the start like it is doing a "try again" function. I am able to get into safe mode, but I don't have a recovery disk, lost it when I moved. What I'd like to do is just wipe this HHD clean and load a new OS. What do I need to do?? Thanks for any help.

"I think it might be a virus, do to the warning I got before my PC rebooted by itself'

Posting that "warning message" would have been helpful.

"I am able to get into safe mode"

Then you should be able to fix the problem without having to do a reinstall.

"What I'd like to do is just wipe this HHD clean and load a new OS"

If that's what you want to do, why did you post? Which "new" OS do you want to install?

Instead of choosing Safe mode from the Windows loading choices menu, try choosing

- Disable automatic restart.......

If you then get a blue screen message,
- quote the STOP: 0Xx0000xx error (we don't need the stuff in brackets beside that)
- if there is a problem file named, it's often near the end of the text - tell us what that is
- if it mentions a mini dump file was made, that file can be analyzed

- Enable VGA mode
That loads Windows normally except it forces Windows to use default VGA graphics.
If that gets you to the desktop screen, if Windows works fine ignoring the symptoms caused by the video being VGA, your problem is probably related to your specific video drivers. They can be un-installed in Enable VGA mode - they often cannot be un-installed in Safe mode.

- Last known good......
(that usually doesn't work)
