XP laptop reboot loop

Specs: Windows xp media center sp2 (?), intel 820d / 1gb ram

a few weeks ago my computer suddenly restarted while i was installing lavasoft ad-aware and got stuck in a reboot loop when reaching the windows xp logo. after researching for a few hours, i came upon this article:

which solved my problem, and allowed me back into my computer. today, it happened again, and i followed that article and it worked. then suddenly it restarted when i opened my game, and happened 2 more times afterwards when i opened itunes and firefox. i would get past the reboot loop using the above article. i then made the mistake (?) of uninstalling service pack 3 from the program list in safe mode since it was still there, and now i cannot use the above method to get access to my computer because i get an invalid file/directory error when trying to uninstall what isn't there.

i pulled the stop code "0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x8754b3b2, 0xf79eb26c, 0xf79eaf68)" when i disabled automatic restart on error.

my hp has the recovery console already installed on a separate partition (i think), i can access it before it starts up xp, and i don't have the xp disk.

i have run chkdsk /r , fixboot, and any other "fix" i found during online research multiple times. i downloaded a bootdisk from, ran scan disk and it said there are no problems, yet it still will not get past the xp loading screen. i don't know how to fully utilize the bootdisk however.

i have work files on this computer i need to get onto my laptop before i even think of reformatting.

i'm very frustrated and seem to have run out of things to try. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for reading,
