My friend recently received a hand me down computer with Windows XP on it. He still connects via dial up. When he attempts to go online he is getting error 633, modem in use by another program. Looked this up and found it could be Palm Pilot software conflicting with the modem. So, I guess I should have my friend ask the person who gave him the computer if there is any software that he put on the computer that could conflict with the modem? Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

No need to do that, do you know what every program does to your computer. You have found one clue, get him to do a search for Palm.
Also, make sure SP3 is installed.
Here is another fix. error 633
Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or not configured properly.
Thanks for your responses! I am also going to check that everything is connected properly. He also has an HP all-in-one printer/copier/fax.

Most of the time, this error 633 can occur if you already have an active broadband connection. To resolve this issue, you must disconnect the existing broadband connection to establish the new connection. You must only have one broadband connection that is active. Wish this helps your friends.
