XP: CD drive drops off directory structure

November 1, 2010 at 08:14:24
Specs: Windows XP
My CD does not show up on the directory explorer. One of my softwares is able to write a cd without the directory. By this I know that the drive is connected and operational. Other softwares require access to directory, and are disabled.

1. Start > Right Click on "My Computer" and Select Manage.

In the Window that comes up select "Disk Management" and check if your CD shows up in there.

Has it got a drive letter allocated?
Is it being masked by another device using the same drive letter?

2. Start > Right Click on "My Computer" and Select Properties

In the window that pops up click on the "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager"
Does it show an entry for "DVD/CD-ROM drives"?
If it does expand it (click on the + sign) does it show your device?

The first path does not show it.
The second path finds it. It shows up with a yellow block with an exclamation point in it.
