Specs: Windows XP sp2
When I turn on my laptop I get a black screen that says " No bootable devices". I went into bios and there is no option to return to default settings. It doesn't see the cd drive, flash drive, external hard drive or external cd drive. "F-12" has no diagnostic option. I have tried changing the boot order to no avail. Please help!

On a desktop, there is usually a CMOS jumper to reset BIOS to default factory settings (power unplugged), there should be something similar on laptops (you might want to contact Dell on that).

Hi, thanks for taking time to answer my question. I am told my laptop does not have a jumper to clear the cmos and I am at a loss on what to do next. Laptop is older and belongs to my 16 y.o son. I would like to fix myself if you or anyone can give any insight. Thanks.

It should have a motherboard battery. If you can find it and disconnect it for a short time, that should reset the CMOS to the defaults. Before you do that, disconnect the AC cord and remove the big laptop battery.

The CMOS does not reset by simply pulling the battery.

Why do you want to reset the CMOS when the problem is a bad drive controller?

If you really want to reset the BIOS then you will need to remove the keyboard and look for the BIOS jumper.

I would recommend you do none of the above. Doing so may damage your laptop beyond any repair.

That is a pretty old laptop if its the one that came out around 2003.

Is usb enabled in the bios?
Does the bios see the INTERNAL hard drive?
Does this unit have a floppy drive and can you use a boot floppy in it?
If you put a bootable cdrom in the cd drive do you get a choice to boot from it?

No, it does not see the internal cd drive. When I push the on button, I get a black screen that says " No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". Nothing works.
