WindowsXP keeps freezing during games.

May 30, 2011 at 10:14:22
Specs: Windows XP
Hi I have a problem with playing games on my computer. My PC freezes in the middle of a game then all of a sudden I have to turn it off. Before I kept getting responses that say Display driver is not responding. Even before I use to get blue screens now I don't get those anymore. I play games like GrandChase, TalesRunner, and OGPlanet Games. There is only 1 game that doesnt freeze named LostSaga from OGPlanet games. But the others do. A few minutes later after I play games the graphics start to mess up. When I notice this I know the PC will freeze. I have updated everything on Windows XP. I have Service Pack 3. All of a sudden it wants to act up. Is it my fans, my monitor temperature, or my computer itself. I downloaded SpeedFan to check the fans on my computer and I don't know how to use it. I am allowed on the internet and everything but games. It just freezes up. I have been going through this issue for almost 3 months now and I spend almost 6 hours everyday trying to figure out this issue. Please, please HELP!!!

"Display driver is not responding" The problem is the v-card driver but i don't know if u have a v-card or igp(list the system specs). U need to uninstall the old driver and restart the system then install new driver also u can try to do the same with the mobo drivers.

You have Intel integrated graphics, which are weak for game playing. You need to buy an add in graphics card.

Post the brand and full model of your computer like I instructed you to do in the other thread.

Also sounds like your computer is overheating.

Ok the latest chipset I got is 10/14/2005. I just tried playing a game. The connection is moving faster but the graphics are still messing up. I just downloaded another chipset called Intel (R) Embedded Graphics Drivers with configuration Editor (CED) package:

Intel(R) Embedded Graphics Drivers (IEGD)

Now do I just uninstall the last chipset and then put the newest in??

You are not downloading chip sets. Chip sets are hardware components that are integrated onto the motherboard. What you are downloading are chip set drivers.

I asked for the make and full model of your computer, not for the chip set drivers.

In order to get the best driver the computer model is needed.

Yes. Like 1 year ago I had a problem with my graphics like this but this is not that worse. Last time the graphics messed up on the desktop and the whole computer. Then we figured out that the memory card had dust on it. Then I had to delete all my memory and start over. This time the graphics will work on the internet and everything else but the games.

And plus I already downloaded SpeedFan instead. I just need to know how to work it.

You need to watch HWMonitor while you are playing the games. Right now you are idling. You need to stress the hardware. HWMonitor is in the bottom tray isn't it? Well when you start having problems with the game then open HWMonitor up and reord the temperatures. The ones right below the voltage list.

You can try. The drivers may not be the issue. I have told you repeatedly that you need to run HWMonitor while you are playing the game to see what happens to the temperatures.

Laptops overheat very easily. You can damage the GPU by constantly stressing it by overheating. If that turns out to be the problem then you could get a laptop cooler.

You may also need to clean out the dust from the ventilation areas.

It may be that your computer is running out of power when you play intensive games. Look at see if you can find the wattage listed anywhere on the power supply and post it here. 230 Watts might be slightly low for extreme gaming. Try this: Unplug all of the non-essential components from the computer (I'm mainly indicating things plugged into USB ports). Leave everything essential to operate the game, and try running it. Does it stop freezing or not happen as often? The motherboard may be getting a lack of power which causes components to lose performance which ultimately leads to freezing up of the computer.

Am I the only one who thinks 504MB RAM might be a little low for running the OS and gaming?

With a fully updated XP SP3 and antivirus it seems I find the OS can take up to 25-40% of the RAM. For snappy performance the bare minimum I recommend people run XP on is 1GB and I usually recommend 2GB.

I remember back in 2001 how quick XP was with 256MB RAM. Now fast forward to 2011 with 10 years of patches and software/technology advances, 256MB is a joke and in my opinion not even 512MB is enough.

T-REXX:
You do probably need more RAM if you only have 504MB. I have 4GB in mine and some of my games are still slow. Also the PSU probably needs an upgrade. Here, I got you some links to upgrade you might need for your PC to do decent gaming:

Power Supply Upgrade (300 Watts, $35.00): http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-...

Graphics Upgrade (256MB Memory, AGP, $25.00): http://www.amazon.com/Nvidia-Geforc...

RAM Upgrade (2 X 1GB Chips, $55): http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Channel-D...

Be wary that these upgrades need to be compatible with your system before you buy, so do some research to make sure they are compatible with your system.

How can you accuse anyone here of leaving you hanging when this is response #112?

You obviously do not know what you are doing and don't seem to heed the advice that has been given.

I suggest you copy your personal files to an external location like CDR and then either try to perform a system restore using a restore point dating back to before this latest problem. If that doesn't work, then re-install Windows.

As far as your current system goes, it is not a gaming platform and never will be. You would be best off to get someone to assemble one for you.

You need a PSU, graphics card and more memory, at the very least.

Now, did you actually read the path to all those references? What is your Q drive? Some external, like a flash drive perhaps? If it isn't present when you run the scan it can't find those references.

You may well be infected. Why can't you run Safe Mode? Are you using a USB keyboard and get no response when trying F8? If so, use a PS/2 keyboard or the original USB keyboard, if it came with one.

You are looking for problems where there may not be any. A few orphan files in the registry do no harm. Aggressive cleaner DO harm. They tend to remove entries that need to be there.

You have been playing with this for over three weeks. Just wipe the hard drive by deleting the partition and reinstalling WinXP. Then install any missing drivers. Then install ALL Windows updates, starting with SP3. Then install security essentials and perform a scan right then. Then enable the Windows firewall (see link below).

After all that, then install your programs.

The Icons and the control panel. I am running driver scanners to see if I am missing any drivers that arent up to date. Anyway here is what I am using:

Device Doctor:

This scans for drivers to update. It found some drivers that arent up to date. It gave me 5 drivers that needed to be updated. They all are in 2 packages.

DriverMax:

This one is my favorite. It shows ALL drivers whether they are up to date or not. If you want to update any drivers it has newer versions or latest versions to update to. If you want to try it FREE you can just make an account. But you can only download 2 drivers per day. If you wanna upgrade it you have to pay. You can even download more than 2 drivers per day. My display driver is out of date and they have ALOT of updates to it but I have to go in order. It tells you when your drivers need to be updated or if you have the latest version already. This scanner even has a website itself full of downloads. If you have any issues you can just post a comment.

I will keep you guys updated everyday after I download 2 drivers.

Apparently I got a blue screen today while playing a game. I forgot to stop and read it.

Just forget it I've been working on this for almost 4 Months now.I'm so tired. I can't stand it. I gave it 4 days rest. What else is new. It won't be fixed it keeps freezing. I tried so hard. I guess I will just have to use this computer on a regular basis.

Thanks for trying though. OtheHill quit your complaining and whining. RMT2 is way better than you.

Thanks RMT2 for trying.

It's the registry. If you want to find me a scanner without no pay to fix it I would appreciate it because when I had SystemCare4 it repaired the registry then I tried a game some of the graphics were fixed but when I log off and log back on it's back. But SystemCare4 makes my computer slower.

Yeah, but the Dimension E310 is actually supposed to be a workhorse computer. That was Dell's goal of the Dimension series. Right now I have a Dell Dimension 8300 and love it. Here is my current config for my gaming if you want to see:

Video Card: Nvidia Geforce FX5200-128MB Memory, Decent For Games 2006 and older. Probably not your best choice for games, but will do for just regular desktop work.
RAM: 4 GB-PNY 1 GB Sticks, Great for keeping XP running strong.

Yeah, the integrated graphics probably do not have enough memory in them by themselves, but I just came up with an idea to fix this. You can tell the computer to use it's RAM for Video Memory instead of memory that the system can use. The thing is is that you don't have very much extra RAM, so this procedure might pack a punch at slowing down your computer. But it is reversible, so don't worry. To do this:

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Turn it on.
3. On the Dell Logo screen, press F2.
4. The dell's BIOS should pop-up.
5. Now you need to look around for a setting called "AGP Aperture".
*AGP could be replaced with PCI, or PCI-Express.
6. The setting should be in something related to "Memory Information".
7. Now set it to say, 256MB.
8. Exit the BIOS and save changes.
9. Boot up and try one of your games.
*The system may say "System Memory has changed.", just continue.

I took a look online and it says that update 4 is the latest version. Is the BIOS asking you for a password when you try to enter?

Looking around, I saw that some people press Control+F1 to enter the BIOS with advanced settings. I don't know whether it will work on a Dell Motherboard, but it is worth a shot.

Truthfully, I am out of ideas now. I got the link to the Intel Support Page for your specific chipset, but I have to say that you have a 1 in a million chance to get the Intel Graphics working with the games. Your best shot is to invest some money into a new video card for your system. I already found one for you that has 512MB of memory (never found in any Intel Integrated Graphics), PCI-Express which is compatible with your system, and it only costs $24! Here is the link to it:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...

If you want help, I can guide you through installing the card if you decide to get it.

Also, here is the link to the Intel Support for your chipset:

You have Intel integrated graphics, which are weak for game playing. You need to buy an add in graphics card. OtheHill said this in post #5. It still applies

Before I leave I wanna tell all of you guys thank you for helping.

My story before everything started to finally mess up:

One day I was playing my game. Through the whole game the graphics were not messed up. Then when my person started running real fast playing TalesRunner the computer immediately froze. This happened multiple times. Right after the multiple times then the graphics started to messup. I have a feeling that I am not using a USB.

Thank you for helping.
