Before considering a re-install or repair of XP do you have back-up of critical files which you will loose? Do you have registry backup in the form of Erunt or other means?

Or use a knoppix or ubuntu disk to boot system as is; then access and copy files from HD to DVD...

knoppix.com and ubuntu.com have free ISO download; which save to a HD; burn to DVD boot with that DVD. Then copy files to DVD.

After that... what make and model of PC; and do you have an XP (full version) setup disk - or just a recovery disk?
