Right, you have told us what the problem is. Now tell us what you were doing to cause the problem and someone might have an answer.

Was this a floppy dies, a hard disk, the system disk or some other kind of disk. A brief description of what you were trying to achieve would an enormous help.

Create a GParted CD and Boot from that, it has the facility to format drives etcetera:

To format any partition containing Windows you have to boot from an external source. You cannot format a Windows partition while Windows is running.

A Windows XP CD will be sufficient.

Your laptop should have a method of restoring to factory state. Each brand is different. You may need to supply restore disks, as with Dell, or use built-in factory restore utilities on Acer, and newer emachines and Gateway laptops.
