windows xp wont start

Specs: N/A
My windows starts up then a message comes up on the screen. It says inserting an index $0 of file 12160. Is there anyway to fix this

If you google using the exact error message you get a few references to very similar issues...

It would appear it's got something to do with the drive; and chkdisk figures in most of the references too...

Also in some cases data loss is an issue as a result of some of the efforts to deal with it...

I strongly advise you to first secure/safeguard your data - before setting about resolving the problemss as posted...

Get yourself a knoppix or ubuntu (linux variants on cd/dvd) and boot with that. Then copy all data etc. to optical media; and verify the copies are OK on at least one one other sytem. Then set about reesolving the porblems as posted... -

Both have a free ISO image which you can download to a hard-drive. Then burn it to a DVD; boot with that DVD.

The OS runs from the DVD; installs itwself into RAM only; the on-board hard-drvie is now a resource only for the Linux booted OS and thus you can access it contents etc... (unless the drive is already duff/faulty etc...).
