New with XP? How new? If you had the system for a while, I would suggest checking to see if the hard drive is nearly full. If under warranty, maybe you should have them look at it under your warranty. Try System Restore to a date before you set the disc clean up.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.

So when you try and run a Defrag, you're getting a message that you need to run Scan Disk?

You said "will only do one in word only". Will do one what?

Perhaps a little clarification would help.

Georgette Collins,
I tried to punctuate that for you so it would make more sense.

If it asked you to do a scan disk, then you should do it
Tell us exactly HOW you are trying to defrag it. Your post is hard to grasp.

Also if the hard drive has less than 15% free space per partition, WinXP will refuse to run defrag.

Are you agreeing to have chkdsk/f run the next time Windows starts?
