Specs: Windows XP
My brother has a HP laptop Pav. with Windows XP. It received a windows update so I restarted the computor and now it will not go any further than the loading screen where it loading bar constantly scrolls. I've tried booting in Safe Mode and the commands come up, then it just hangs with the commands and doesn't go any further. My brother had Windows XP Pro (sp2 I think) and I couldn't find the Windows XP install cd so I tried a Windows XP Home Edition to do windows recovery. After going through the correct prompts (f8 to accept License agreement, R for recovery) and it does all the loading, it still hangs up in the same screen with the loading bar still scrolling. What else can I possibly try???

Can take up to 2 hours for safe mode to load, depending on how bad your PC is affected. Let it load and then do a system restore back to before the update

For a repair don't forget:
home=home
pro=pro
You cannot mix & match
