Which web browser do you use? IE, Firefox? other?

Most have tabbed browsing which opens new pages in a new tab on the same window. There is usually a setting somewhere in preferences where you can turn off tabbed browsing

rondena, If you use Internet Explorer right click your Start button, choose Properties, under the Taskbar tab uncheck "Group similar taskbar buttons, click Apply/OK.

that choice about grouping similar items is already unchecked and it still doesn't show each one side by side (each time I open a web site then minimize it, then open another, the second one etc. takes over the first, then when I go to close out the top one, it closes all of them.

Which version of IE are you using? The option to turn off tabs and also an option to open new links in in a new window instead of the same window, can be found in the advanced settings menu. Look in Tools> Internet Options

the latest - i think 7.
NO - I just checked, I have IE 8.
anyway I unchecked the enable tabbed browsing but that unchecks all, and you suggested to check the open links new tab so I left the first check and unchecked ope links in new tab and it still does not change. any other suggestions now that you know it's IE 8?
appreciate all your help. kris

The latest is 8. If you have 7 then go to tools>internet options
It should open on the General tab.
In the lower box relating to tabbed browsing click the settings button and untick "enable tabbed browsing"

Check also the setting for opening links from other progs. Set it to "new window"
