Specs: Windows XP, 3.192 GHz / 1023 MB
I have a old computer that I want to update. But im not sure what the best choice is. It’s a old dell optiplex gx280
Cpu: Pentium 4 3.2ghz HT
Ram: 2gb ddr2
Video: intel (im not sure what model if needed I can figure it out.
Form factor: I have to small form factor version
I think it has sp2 on it but if so I want to know if I should update EVERYTHING to sp3 (everything meaning security updates and all that cause ive never updated it) or if possible I wanted to upgrade it to windows 7 but im not sure how it would handle it. Last time I updated an old computer to 7 it wouldn’t play video anymore cause it would lag really bad. Also if someone could point me to a cheap $30 graphics card for it that would be awesome. Im don’t plan to game with it I just need it for casual use

If you can't play youtube (320p) on newer computers, then you know you got ripped off

Your system should have no problem running Win7. Upgrading to an actual video card is good advice but be careful of your card choice. Your system has a PCI Express 1.0a slot so stick to an early generation PCIe card. v2.0 should work, v2.1 or v3.0 will not. Here's your system specs:

I'm curious why you never updated XP to SP3? It was released almost 4 yrs ago!

"i quit updating my stuff. cause whenever i did it just ruined it"

Miliions of people upgraded to SP3 without any issues whatsoever. And much of the current software requires SP3. You didn't do yourself any favors by not upgrading. If it "ruined it", it's most likely because you did something wrong, not because there's something wrong with SP3.

The 8400GS is a PCIe 2.0 card. It should work, but it may not. If you're not concerned with gaming & just want to get away from the horrible Intel graphics, something like this should be sufficient:

k, then i might get the ATI card then. it seems like it will be good enough cause i do play minecraft. but thats about all. also, i followed the instructions for sp3 install and everything and each time it just messes up. my computer bluescreens or runs super slow.
also, i found another card for comparasin, cause like is said i play minecraft so i dont know which would be better for the price http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...
