windows xp set up

Specs: Windows XP, AMD 2100 XP
trying to load xp on a computer where hd's have nothing on them.set cmos for cdrom to boot first. windows set up won't start unless hd's are completey disconnected. w/ them connected it won't boot from cd and I get NTLDR Missing. HELP!!!!!

You are still trying to boot to the hard disk and not the CD Rom. NTLDR missing can only come from the hard disk and only then if there is an installed OS or at least, a failed installation.

When the computer boots you should get a message from the CD, Press any key to boot CD. If you don't get that, or don't press any key the computer will attempt to boot from the hard disk.

Have you formatted the HDD ???
You have to do that, even nothing on them.

ok then what do I need to do, bios setting are definantely set for the cdrom to to boot 1st

the comp i'm working on is an older one Just trying to get it running to help a friend,never had to format one before. mine is sata2 this one is ide no way to connect into mine. can I format w/ no programs other than bios thats all this one has right now

just informed this comp has had trouble w/ booting before,could the board be fried?

A bad CD drive could do this. If the computer can't read the CD the boot will try the next device in line, which in this case is the HD. A motherboard problem could also cause this.
