Windows XP seems to have disappeared

Specs: Windows XP
I went out and left the computer on, and when I came back it looks like my computer had restarted. It was asking for a boot disk or something. I went back and disabled startup from anything except the hard drive to see if would actually give more information. After that I got a Disk Boot Error.

I changed the BIOS so I could boot from the CD and tried the fixboot in Recovery Console. I also tried fixmbr but I'm not sure it did anything. ChkDsk seemed to say that everything was okay.

I went back to the XP setup screen and planned on using the option to repair XP but it said it couldn't detect any installed version. Maybe it wasn't my hard drive but Windows. I already installed SP3 a few months ago but some new updates showed up and I installed them but I can't remember if it was yesterday or the day before.

I also put my computer in Hibernation so I can't remember if I had restarted after that. My Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVG software were also updated.

UPDATE: Maybe it is the hard drive. Windows setup shows the drive as:
38163 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi. It also says setup cannont access this disk. I tried the ChkDsk /R and that didn't help either. Why would ChkDsk show the drive as being okay when it isn't.

Thanks for any help.

Shaw978, possible both your HD and your CD drive went out (power surge?) at the same time? I've had both fail, just never together, but...

Thanks for the reply. My CD-ROM is okay. My hard drive isn't showing up, even as a slave, so it must have failed while I was out.
