I'm not sure what you mean when you say the restores don't work. Do you go through the restore process but it fails or are you unable to start the restore? Any error messages? Are you on an account with administrator priveleges?

Have you tried running it from command prompt:

While I don't debate that it's important both functions should work properly, what led you to try these functions and find out they're malfunctioning? You said the computer is working fine otherwise. Maybe we'll find a clue.

If the computer is working otherwise then I suggest you turn off system restore and then turn it back on. This will clear any old restore points. Then see if you can manually create a restore point.

System restore in XP is set to use no more than 12% of the disk space. If your hard drive is pretty full, that could prevent restore from creating any new restore points.

You may need to clear temp files. I suggest you use Ccleaner Slim to do that. et it from the link below. Zone Alarm is old news IMO and may be interfering with restore. I haven't touched ZA in years.

No system restore point works, not even new ones. Disk Cleaner didn't help. Nor CCleaner. Only one user account on the machine. Clicking Safe Mode won't take the machine into safe mode. Probably corrupted something trying multiple defraggers such as ones bulit into Ashampoo utilities, Auslogic's, DisKeeper, Ultimate Defragger, before settling on the one in Speeditup Free. Tortured the poor computer with swiss army knife programs trying to speed it before that. Now if I try anything, I use Revo Uninstaller. But I don't know how to recover my abilility to use restore points or to access safe mode.
I think my Start menu began not showing all my programs and this led to me trying to use a system resore. Start is back to normal but still not able to use a system restore or enter safe mode.

Did you try disabling and then resetting restore as I suggested above?

Clicking Safe Mode won't take the machine into safe mode.

How are you trying to get into safe mode. To get into Safe Mode you don't click anything, you tap F8 during the boot process before Windows begins to load. You should then get a menu where you can select the type of Safe Mode you want as well as an alternative to boot Windows Normally.

I would get rid of the "Swiss Army Knife" applications. Most of these applications that claim to speed up your PC are useless at best and scams and mallware at worst.
