windows xp repair/boot problem

October 13, 2010 at 09:42:01
Specs: Windows XP, amd 2.0ghz/512mb
Make a long story short, trying to setup replacement hd into old comp. Was having problems getting past verifying dmi pool... googled it and reset a setting in bios which then allowed me to boot from cd. Boot from cd to try to install windows xp sp1, not a clean install tho, just an install over the current windows. Now after that was done, can no longer boot from cd or floppy. Just says "windows could not start because of an error in the software." load neede dlls for kernel. Which I also googled and it said a mismatch in some .dll files. But my problem now is I still can't boot from cd, it'll just head straight to "windows could not start because of an error in the software." I've played around with the bios and start up of the different devices. Resetting bios to defaults and fail safe. But so far to no avail! Any help would be much appreciated!! If you need any more info feel free to ask.

You have to "press any key...." when prompted, otherwise the system will bypass the CD & attempt to boot off the HDD. Here's how to properly do an XP repair installation:

Thank you for the reply. I do when it prompts, but even after that, it takes me to the screen about the display "windows could not start because of an error in the software." load needed dlls for kernel.

"windows could not start because of an error in the software"

That is a Windows issue, not a Windows installation issue. Are you sure you're booting off the CD?

It won't allow me to boot of the cd, when the press any key prompts, I press a button, but then redirects me straight to the software issue.

"It won't allow me to boot of the cd"

That makes no sense. Are you seeeing the prompt to "press any key to boot from CD"? Are you pressing a key? Could it be that your disk is dirty? Are you using a USB or PS/2 keyboard?

I see the prompt, it would go like this.

Verifying dmi pool data.....

Boot from cd:

press any key to boot from cd

*pressing a key*

press any key to boot from cd....

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as:

load needed DLLs for kernel.

Please contact your support to report this problem.

I have it setup to boot from removable, then cd drive, then hard drive.
I have the cd in the drive. I can see all the drives in the bios.
