windows xp not installing usb hid but my mouse and keyboard

Specs: Win XP, 2.8 / 4gb
I am trying to (re) install WinXP on a Dell box (using a backup oem files installation CD I had). Upon reaching the point where windows installs all found devices, it get to where the USB HID drivers need to be installed. Here's the problem: the keyboard and the mouse are both USB devices, and they both stop responding (duh) when xp install asks me if I want to in fact install the usb drivers. This box doesn't have PS2 ports, only USB. Obviously, I am stuck there, since any further interaction has to be done with either the keyboard or the mouse, which are now non-responding. I restarted the whole install process (xp install process resumes at the "Installing Devices" point) and everything stops again at the point where I described above. Any pointers? (no pun intended). Thanks in advance.

Are the mouse and keyboard the original units that came with the Dell? If not, are they at least wired type?

It's an HP Pavilion Slimline s57xx series. My issue is way more complicated than what I outlined above.
Never mind. Thanks all. I opted for the less-kosher solution, which is to install the drive on an older WinXP setup (vanilla clone), which has PS2 connectors. Then, I bought a new 2-TB disk and hooked everything up so as to transfer all data via Ethernet, from the old XP box to a new Win 8 desktop. Thank you anyway.
