Windows XP logon user page

Specs: Windows XP
When I sign off and leave my computer for awhile I don't get a cursor when I try to sign back in and I can't make one come up unless I go onto the guest page and do a few things and then sign off there or restart my computer. I am the computer administrator on this computer. Its very irritating.

Done anything to perhaps produce the situation - as in install anything recently?

Or have per chance run any cleaner-utils (ccleaner comes to mind; likewise any number of registry tools...)?

If you have a rough idea of when it started to happen... can you go back a restore point or two and see if it persists?

Also (a very long shot) when you boot up: try safe-mode and also last known good config? Who knows - either of those may also resolve it?

If you create a new user-account with "full Admin" permissions... does the problem persist with that new Admin account?

I have had this problem pretty much since I bought this computer in 2006. I have reformatted and reloaded windows xp twice since then and still the problem persists.. I haven't run any cleaner programs. I don't know how to make changes to the registry. I'm trying the, create a new password protected account, test now. Did I mention this is a password protected account? The guest account that I can use is not.
