Microsoft Windows xp home edition with s...

Specs: Windows XP Home edition, AMD 64 Athlon / 712 MB ram
OK, I have a Compaq Presario computer.
There was no hardware change except for adding a new RAM stick into the system over the past 5 years.
Now, the system freezes up any time.
It does not freeze during boot.
It freezes when I am surfing the internet or running Task Manager.
When it freezes, the hard disk stops spinning.
Keyboard will not work and the mouse cursor freezes.
even taking an USB drive out from the system does not help to make windows respond..
A hard disk scan with SMART hard disk technology does not reveal any sign of hard disk problems.
I use the machine for development purposes.

Freezups can be software or hardware related. Have you checked your eventlogs to see if there are any reported errors at the time?
Have you checked system temperatures? An overheating CPU or graphics chip can lock up a system.

'The other account does not have this problem'
Right there that tells me you are infected. I would run all the basic malware and virus scans starting with
Malwarebytes

Virus scan and anti spyware detects NOTHING!!!
Even tried a bootable anti-virus disc. NOTHING
The other account user has just reported that the problem is now happening to his account.
It seems like most of the time, freezes come from using Mozilla Firefox
Only once did Windows freeze up when using task Manager

I am having the EXACT same problem. Driving me nuts. Seems to happen more often if a flash file is running on a web page I am on.

Those are not very strong utilities, sorry to say.
Try these great free cleaners
1- trojan remover
2- hitman pro
Run those till they are clean.
If that doesn't fix the problems use combofix
and follow the instructions on the bleeping computer site. Also be sure to get combofix from that site instead of any other sites.
