Windows XP 64-bit Blackscreen

Specs: Windows XP 64-bit , AMD|PH II X4 955 3.2G AM3/ Kingston DIII1066 KVR1066D3N7
I had been running Windows XP 64-bit for over 2 years with absolutely no problems. I then installed some updates to my ATI drivers and the Catalyst Control Center. About a week after the updates I encountered some problems. When I was running a game (any game) my computer would lock up and the screen would turn black and the monitor light would flash and I was forced to manually restart.

I then thought it was because of dust build up, which is very hectic in my home. I cleaned out the case thoroughly and thought I had solved the problem, but then it happened again. I then thought I had a bad motherboard. So I then decided to upgrade my computer anyway. I now have a Crosshair 3 motherboard, a AMD|PH II X4 955 3.2G AM3 processor, 2 1G Kingston DIII1066 KVR1066D3N7 memory sticks, a ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, and a Hitachi 750gig hard drive.

When i assembled the new computer, everything worked fine for about a week, then the same thing started happening as before. It seems to happen now more and more often for no reason, even when I'm not in-game. It happens at startup sometimes or just happens at random intervals after startup. I have absolutely no idea what the problem is. I uninstalled the catalyst control center thinking it was that, but the problem still happened. I also did 2 full hard drive wipes and restarted with bare bones updates and such and it still happens, even when nothing extra is installed.

I'm thinking it is either the newest windows update or the latest ATI drivers update that is the problem. If anyone has answered this problem, please let me know. The only problem with that assumption is that the blackscreen occurs within the BIOS. I switched out my graphics card with another one and it still happened. So I'm not sure what is the problem.

I've checked the device manager and the only flag is on the ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver. I believe that driver is mainly for watching tv on the computer and such, am i wrong?

I have also checked the Event Viewer for errors or any info that may be relevant. The only errors/warnings in the event viewer that i see as possibly relevant or that I don't fully understand are shown in the link below. The Error is the crash upon playing the game "crysis". This error occurs if i attempt to play any game, despite the graphical nature of the game. The warnings I'm not so sure about. The ASP i believe is just a simple internet application error.

Perhaps I just have a bad graphics card? I swapped it out for a dfferent card, but the black screen still occurs. so maybe they are both bad. My original is about 2 and a half years old and the other i swapped it out for the test is about the same age.

it`s either your graphics card or your driver

first try installing the driver from your CD (if you have one)

if not, post the name of the graphics card, and we`ll find the driver for you
