Need more information about what happens with updates and your AV compatibility issues.

From that given:
Is It XP Home or XP Pro?
256M RAM is very light for XP, you need 1G, preferably 2G, to run decently.
You ought to be on Service Pack 3.

Any of these three free AV's should be fine (my preferred order):
Avast.
Microsoft Security Essentials.
AVG.

Please turn off capitals.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Running XP any version on a 400mhz processor with only 256mb ram is a recipe for disappointment. Sorry but it isn't worth spending whatever it will cost to put more ram into it . Something of that vintage may already be maxed out in the ram department.
By the time you install an antivirus program the system will be under stress and will lock up as soon as you try to do anything else. Get more ram or retire that machine and get something more modern. Other option would be to wipe it and run 98 on it.

before you retire it or run 98, you could see how this runs.
