I have the same problem. I had 3 others that would not install. I had to install them one by one. This did not work for the 2898 - even after a reboot.

I had the same problem, but was able to get it installed by downloading the update from the Microsoft Download Center at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/... - While running the update, it did have an issue backing up the registry, but I selected the Retry option, and it finished installing.

I tried a download from here,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...

During the installation, I got a message of KB2502898 setup could not backup registry key. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\\SP3\KB2502898 to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB2502898$\reg00003. 87: The parameter is incorrect.

Still no install.

I was just going to add - by the third retry - it did go ahead and install.

I also had the same problem. I have Wndows XP Pro (SP 3) with Media Manager 2005 and even tried in Safe Mode--got the message KB 2502898 Setup Error--Set up could not back up registry key.... to file C:\windows\$NTUninstallKB2502828$\reg 00003.

I have not yet "retried" to get it to work, but those who have, did you also lose your virtual drives (which are necessary for the Media manager portion of the XP OS?

I have since tried several times (in regular Windows Mode) and it still will not install. Any ideas? Should I manually create the directory it is looking for (message I got in Safe mode)?

I did download the update program and tried again--second time it did install and hope that's the end for awhile. Thanks for the tip.
