Specs: Windows XP
The new "windows search" bar that was added to my start menu is too long. On my other PC, the box is maybe an inch and a half, on this one it is like 5" long and taking up most of my taskbar!! I searched the registry for a key that corresponds to the length of the bar, but couldn't find anything.

Why do you call it "NEW".???
What have you done to make it "NEW" ???

I'm referring to "Windows Search 4.0" or whatever it's called. You know, the one that was an optional windows update.

It is "new" because there was never a windows search bar in the XP start menu before.

...there was never a windows search bar in the XP start menu before.

Right click the Start button,
then click Properties,
then click the "Customize..." button,
then click "Advanced" tab,
then scroll down the "Start Menu items" list, looking for the word Search
If the box for that is not check marked, then that may be why
you never had Search showing before.

Thanks for the reply.. I know how to remove the search bar and how it got there, I was just explaining the reason why I referred to the bar as "new".

My question is how does one make the length of the bar smaller. The search bar on my desktop is maybe 2" long, while the one on my laptop takes up most of the start menu and interferes with my view of minimized programs.

Sorry if I'm being unclear, I haven't slept in days and my eyes are closing as I type this lol. Here's a pic of the offending search bar so you know exactly what I mean:

I'm sure there's a registry key that controls the length of that bar.

I'm sure there's a registry key that controls the length of that bar.

I am afraid not. The Windows Deskltop Search 4.0 utility is a stand-alone utility. You either learn to get used to it or remove it altogether.

Why is it a different size on my PC then? The screen resolution on my laptop is 1366x768 and the desktop is at 1280x1024, maybe that's it. I tried changing the resolution on both but it had no effect on the search bar.

Here's a comparison between the start menus on my PC and the laptop .

Never mind, I figured it out myself.

All you have to do is unlock the taskbar (right click on blank part of start menu then uncheck "lock the taskbar) and the search box can be resized via the mouse.
