Help! Whenever I try to restart my computer (XP SP3)(i.e., Start, Turn Off Computer, Restart) my computer hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down" and does not shut down. I have to manually hold the power button in to make the system turn off. What isn't releasing the system for restart, and how can I track it down?

... Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage". Click "Event Viewer"
in the right pane double click "system" (error records)

... look for (shutdown) time or perhaps red marker

... double click the event to display the description

... aswell as "system" try the other logs you may find Shutdown Performance Monitoring entries
... I've been using SuperFast Shutdown (freeware) without any issues for years.

... once extracted right click shutdown.exe option "pin to start menu"

... also restart.exe

Thank you for responding. Restore to an earlier period worked.... duh, brain lock! I went back a week and restored from there. Must have been some update in between that caused a change in the registry or something. Thanks again.
