'Maybe' if you post one (or more) of the directory names that you are trying to use, someone can tell you what you are doing wrong. It might be that 'long file names' are illegal.

I don't think that there are many people installing the ancient 'Windows for Workgroups 3.11' these days.

The three most important things in computing:
1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.

Re' directory names...

dos and windows 2x/3x (and windows for workgroups), and '9x/ME/NT all are limited to the 8.3 format. 8 legal characters for a directory name; and 8 for a file name - followed by 3 for the file type.

It may be you are not conforming to that format; which is what aegis is querying. As (s)he asks post typical directory names here to verify if you are conforming or not with the 8.3 format...?

And I seem to recall that are certain characters which are described as "illegal"...

something that will remind you what the floder is - and in no more than 8 characters (letters usually).

e.g winfwgrp - or maybe - wfw311 - or maybe - win311

The list is endless; as long as you stick to no more than 8 letters and numbers overall - call it what ever you like?

Addendum to the above...no spaces...oh, and no panic-driven hysterics, please.

Just to confirm - you are using a file or folder name that is NOT longer than 8 characters (and as before typically letters)?

Also can you give us more specific information about the "path" you are trying to install... As in where the destination is on the drive in question?

A google using:

How to install windows for workgroups in virtual PC 2004

as the search term/string brings up much… Rather than post them all here – only three of many below… suggest you do your own google.

The third reference here is interesting as it does remind the questioner to first install dos…; have you installed dos first?

http://www.csrvirtual.com/Windows-N...

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software...

Also how big is the virtual drive/partition into which you installing WFW?

And of course remember that dos and win2x/3x/wfw use fat16 only; and max partition/drive size of 2Gig…
