Windows file qnwzuc.dll

Specs: Windows XP
my computer has started to shut itself off occaisionally, and seems slow.
On restart, a very slow process, messages pop up, one after another.
The first is always "the application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\qnwzuc.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check against your installation diskette"
Others include "Isass.exe - Bad Image" "ctfmon - Bad Image" "helpctr - Bad Image" msim.exe - Bad Image" and about 20 more
This is an older Toshiba laptop I bought at a used computer store, running Windows XP Home.
I don't have any sort of installation diskette

Run your virus checker. If that doesn't help download MalwareBytes freebie and try that.

Please do not post then vanish - let us know the outcome

thank you Derek - I do have AVG2011 Free version running, scanning, and updating always.
Also have Malwarebytes. Updated and ran that too. Downloaded and ran Stopzilla, it said I had over 500 problems(?) including Trojan TDSS, all of which it said it fixed.
Also have CCleaner. Updated and ran that too.
I will say the machine seems a little faster in operation, but still get all these same pop up messages.
Looks like most of these "Bad Image" reports refer to Start up menu items.
But the qnwzuc.dll in System32, how am I going to repair that? And will that repair solve the list of other Bad Images, ehatever that means?

Can you do a system restore to before all this happened?
