Open My Computer, right click on your hard drive (probably C: ) choose Properties, under the "Tools" tab "Error checking" click the "Check Now" button, checkmark both "Check disk options", click the "Start" button and follow the prompts. It may take some time to complete. If this is successful then try to run your defrag.

Malware can prevent things from working.
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

From an M$ KB article I have seen, you can reinstall Defrag.

Check to see if you have the following file ---

If so, then right click it, then click Install

I actually cannot find that file or folder. I've even searched for it
and revealed hidden folders and files.

I think I have seen that INF files are only placed on OEM systems.
Maybe it can be extracted from an XP CD ???
I may have no more to say about the subject.

I'm not sure how to just pull a particular file or folder from the
windows XP CD.

And why don't I have that folder any longer. My defrag worked
perfectly about a month ago and now does not.

Could I have a Virus that I'm not aware of and my Virus scanner
is not picking up or what?
