Specs: win xp sp3, 32 bit desktop
I have a m320 gateway laptop which is 6 yrs old to begin with but last year I upgraded the memory RAM to max 2GB DDRAM.
But now the computer after clean install of Win XP sp3 is behaving real weird.
There is no fast windows changing, icons on desktop are showing messed up,
it is as there was no RAM installed - the speed is same as used to be before
I installed the ram which is slow on 6 yr old machine.
I have tried to open the RAM case & uninstall & re-install ram but have got to that stage can't find a screw driver.
Checked sys info - it is showing 2 GB RAM.
FYI : with the ram it was fast, therefore it would be nice to get that speed back?

If you did a clean install of Windows, did you install ALL the motherboard drivers?

Have you checked "Device Manager" to determine if any of your hardware is missing a driver?

Did you format the partition (before the clean install), or delete it and create a new one? Windows XP's install disk seems to have a problem with it's format utility. Sometimes you still have remnants of data, left over from the previous installation of Windows. These remnants can cause all sorts of problems.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Exactly. A clean install generally means wiping out the existing partition(s), recreating new partitions, formating the new partition using NTFS, then reinstalling Windows, the device drivers, SP3, & all the Windows Updates. Not to mention anti-virus & all the rest of the software you normally use.

Here's a link to the Gateway drivers:

If the computer speed improved when you added the RAM and it is still showing 2G, then there is no reason whatever to think this issue is anything to do with RAM.

Please do not post then vanish - let us know the outcome

Thanks for post, just re-installed same win xp sp3 over existing as upgrade rather than clean, it improved a lot but icons still weird, oh well don't have the time - at least got the speed back & yes driver for all devices re-installed as well. Thanks.
