Specs: Windows XP, Intel P4 1.6 GZ
I have removed the old 80 GB hdd from my laptop which has 2 Win XP OS, & have added the new 500 GB hd w/ Win 7.
I still want to use the old hdd & was wondering if I can add the old hdd through the USB port & use the old hdd as an external hdd but still boot from it simaltanously???
The new hdd has Win 7 but I don't know if I can add boot loader to it for multi operating system?
Any help appreciated?

The answer is yes. You have to setup your bootup order in your BIOS to boot from USB first so that when your USB drive is installed it will boot from it.

Yes you can do it, you have to first turn your HDD into external HDD, Its an easy task and then you can boot it first from your system settings.

The max data transfer rate of the USB 2.0 interface is 480Mbps (60MB/sec). And that assumes 100% efficiency, along with no other devices sharing the interface.

By comparison, an IDE HDD has a max transfer rate of either 100MB/sec or 133MB/sec, depending on your system. Or if it supports SATA drives, the max rate is either 150MB/sec or 300MB/sec. All of these numbers are theoretical though...actual transfer rates will slower.

What I'm getting at is, any OS run from an external drive will perform much slower than if it was run from an internal drive. For best performance, you'd be better off reformatting/repartitioning the 500GB HDD & installing XP on the 1st partition & Win7 on the 2nd partition. The 80GB HDD could then be used externally for storage or backups.
