thanks stu. yes i tried it on my win 7 machine but i think you need to load it on the pc that you need the key for. i cannot get past the setup screen for the recovery disk. i get the startup screen(dell in blue letters) then it goes to the windows xp screen then straight to the setup srceen even w/o the disk being in the drive. is there anyway to bypass this so i can download it.

If the dell system came with windows then the key isn't needed.

Otherwise it will be a long time guessing a few thousand combinations.

"Otherwise it will be a long time guessing a few thousand combinations"

If there are only two characters missing how difficult can it be? There are 26 letters and 10 numbers. That would make it ??um?? 260 possible combinations to try. License keys are not even case sensitive.

If you buy a DELL XP CD it will install without a Product Key, Dell like other OEM vendors use a BIOS Lock Code to ensure legality/activation.

36 times 36 is not 260 by the way.
