If I buy a "wi fi" radio, such as this one:
http://www.universal-radio.com/cata...
then, can I get reception directly to the radio from a free hot spot located about 50 feet outside my apartment window, without going thru my computer? I can't hook the radio to my computer as I have dial up and it isn't fast enough.

It probably would work but 50 feet is getting a bit long for reliable reception. You would need direct line of sight to ensure good reception. It is one of those things you will never know the definitive answer to until you try it.

However, the thing you have to consider is will the free hot spot allow you to make what would be a permanent connection to their network. Free hot spots are usually for people to log in, download their Email, do a bit of browsing and log of again.

You would pay $170 just to get wifi radio reception but you won't pay for DSL or cable internet service? Doesn't am/fm work where you live?

Stuart, thanks. The hot spot is city installed in a park. They put it there because it is a little park that nobody ever uses in hopes to attract some visitors. I was mainly curious if the technology of this stuff is such that a pc connection is not needed. Apparently not and I will give it a try.
