why share a network optical drive?

November 26, 2011 at 16:49:22
Specs: W XP Home, Celeron 2.00 GHz 256 RAM
I shared an optical drive (external, usb cabled to this computer in the specs below) on my wireless network, but I can't play a music cd on a network computer, and I can't watch a dvd on a network computer, but I can see the drive on the other computer, and I can see the files on the disc. I can access a data disc from a different computer. What am I missing here?

Thanks, really good reading, nice refresher course. I didn't see anything that says, "even though you have four computers networked successfully and even though you can access shared resources from one computer to another, and even though you can see the optical drives shared on all computers, and even though you can access data discs on those shared optical drives, the reason you can't play a music CD or watch a DVD over the network is because..."

So, anybody have anything that might clue me in...
