|The way I read your post is that the icons are slow appearing, not that your computer is generally slow. |
1. If you have to wait for any icons to appear at all, then try logging off rather than shutting down. See if it is any better after reboot.
2. If you mean that you have to wait for the the icons to appear slowly, one by one, then probably the iconcache file needs rebuilding. Keep rebooting and it might eventually sort itself out. Otherwise this procedure will usually kick start the process :-
Empty your recycle bin and delete all your desktop "Shortcuts" into it (ONLY the ones with ARROWS). Do NOT touch any system folders, such as My Documents or the Recycle bin. Reboot, then restore your shortcuts from the bin.
One other thing you can do for this second issue is to increase your iconcache size. Copy what is between the lines below into NotePad
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
"Max Cached Icons"="4096"
Make sure there is either one or two lines at the end (as shown). Save the file as iconfix.reg and then double click the reg file. Say yes to all the prompts. You might still have to reboot a few times to sort this out but in the long term the larger iconcache will help prevent the problem from happening again.
Please come back and let us know how you got on.
