Dell Windows CDs are coded to reinstall Windows only on Dell computers. It will not work on any non-Dell computers. You need to buy OEM or retail XP CD for that.

A dell Windows CD will install on a non dell computer as long as it is a Windows CD not a recovery CD. I do not remember dell ever useing recovery image cd's But you will have to have another product key. It will not ask for the product key during the install. You will have to get a key changer and change it that way.

If you have i386 ( about 500mb ) on the Dell Cd, you may like to try making an updated SP2/3 RW CD for yourself.

I use a hp install cd with a generic key.

After installation microsofts key updater is used. You can download it for free! From Microsoft. (use the coa # an letters on side of computer)
Because there is a driver issue I use a free cd that automatically checks hardware against missing drivers and installs any missing drivers.

Keys are funny. If your computer has an Aqua coa the keys are different than blue or a yellow (retail). Some cds are retail or OEM and require blue, yellow, series or aqua coa's.

If it is a non dell system you may be asked for a key, so be sure to have a temp working key to install.

BE SURE!!!!!! to use the key updater after you are up and running because it will automatically activate and allow updates. Plus you windows will be legal.
