why are my icons smeared on the desktop

April 7, 2011 at 13:59:15
Specs: Windows XP, 1Gb
Suddenly, as if a power glitch had occurred, my icons on the desktop became smeared, or have shadows, including my curser. Ipowered off my PC, including the monitor, checked all connections and turned the power back on after about 10 minutes. Everything looked and worked fine until the next morning when I logged back on. The icons are smeared again. This time powering the PC off did not help.

Hard to imagine quite what you are seeing but it could be that the video card has failed. It could be onboard video.

The other possibility is a monitor fault, so if you can either try yours on another computer or borrow a monitor then that can be eliminated from the equation.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

Thanks for the response. I, too, believe, my video card might be failing. My HP Pavillion is about 8 yrs old. So it's no wonder. All of a sudden, though, everything is back to normal. It will probably happen again and with more frequency until it's time to buy a new computer.

If it's a seperate card then pull it out and clean the edge connectors with a pencil eraser. Then pull the card in and out a few times to clear any oxide off the socket itself - you could do the same with the monitor signal cable too.

Sometimes the smallest amount of oxide can cause issues, especially if the connectors have been disturbed.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.
