Solved When starting my pc the 'open with' file box is displayed

June 8, 2013 at 09:28:02
Specs: Windows 7
When I start my pc the 'open file with' box comes up. The file listed is called David. There is no extension. I ran a pc search for a file called David and no results. There is not a program in my start up menu and I cannot see any file relating to David in the msconfig. Ideas will be appreciated on how to trace and remove. I am running Windows 7. Thanks

Try searching again using this string without the quotes "David.*"

There has to be a file extension but Windows 7 hides files extensions for common file types.

Yeah, it's got to be there somewhere else windows wouldn't be trying to open it. Does the search include any external drives you may have connected as well as hidden files?

Not that it should matter with the search but I think it's possible it doesn't have an extension. If windows is hiding the extension because it recognizes the file type then it would know how to open it.

Has anyone else been using the computer--maybe a 'david'--that might have saved a file by that name?

Many thanks to you both. This time I searched with the windows library button as against the start button and found a file in c:/, called David.(this is my first name.) This file is dated last January and was 1.92kb. Unable to open it so I deleted it and the 'open file with' box has gone for now.
Again, many thanks for your advice.

If you haven't yet emptied your recycle bin you may be able to open that file, if you want to.

Try renaming the file to david.mpg, david.jpg, david.doc, david.mov, or any of the file extensions you think might apply.

It's a pretty small file. If you do want to take a look at it you might try NOTEPAD first as it may just be a text file.

Good thinking. Will try if my recycle bin is still full.
Thanks again to you both
