how much memory required for the installation of window xp, i have a ram of 256mb, but it is shared by different hardware , and i have 140mb free memory when i m going to installed the xp window

Though personally always try to install 1000Mb Memory to run AOK !

The minimum RAM required to install XP is 64 MB. However, that isn't very realistic with modern software. To obtain decent performance with modern software you need a minimum of 512 MB, and preferably more.

kashkmk, strikes me that you're confusing free HD space and system memory (RAM). Two different critters.
RAM memory is non-varying and installed separately. Your machine uses it as dynamic storage (changes) when rendering web pages, pictures, etc. while the HD is used for static (fixed) storage to store programs, etc. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples rather than apples to oranges.
