What is That little red x instead of jpg

Specs: Windows XP, intel pent 4/1280mb
some emails have a small red "x" within a larger white rectangle. A sender said it was a photograph. I click on the x but nothing happens. what do i need to do to open it?

Your email program is blocking certain types of images or links.
You will have to modify your security preferences (at your own risk) to allow the images to be downloaded.

What Richard59 said... but also, if the sender forwarded a certain type of email (Incredimail, for instance), then "the source" gets lost, and you will get a ...X...

jamesgkinser , maybe this'll help? The infamous red 'X' can have a number of causes. Generally it means that for whatever reason, the address specified couldn't be reconciled by your machine.
If it appears in mail I've sent, I've found that if I FIRST save the pix to my machine it works. If it's ONLY in mail you receive, look at your security settings or maybe ISP filters as suggested.
