I'm not clear if you're planning on upgrading to xp or from xp? The only real upgrade from xp is to vista and can then be further upgraded to windows 7...works, but costly buying Vista for the layover. There is no upgrade from xp to windows 7. Data can be saved and restored, but no upgrade, programs are usually gone unless you have the installation files. Similarly there was an actual "upgrade version of xp" that you buy to upgrade from windows 98' though I don't know how available that version is anymore. In many cases you save the data, install the new operating system, and move forward....much like life going backwards usually isn't a good idea.

Also without looking up your computer there are other cost or things to consider. To run Windows Vista and Windows 7 you really should have atleast 2 gigs of ram, less will work, but not generally recommended. To derive the visual benefits of Vista/Win 7 requires a pretty decent video card, not likely found on many older models. Microsoft has a tool that scans the computer and tells you if your system can handle it or what areas would need upgraded hardware wise for win 7.....looking for link......

Their also migration tools, to help move data.
