video not playing properly

August 5, 2013 at 19:38:43
Specs: Windows XP
MPEG-2 HD video used to play OK, but now whether in Windows Media Player or VLC media player or uplayer, it has a wavy edge on all moving vertical lines. What has gone wrong? Also why does NERO not play MPEG-2 at all, it only plays H.264?

I think that's a problem with the monitor but try altering the display settings--resolution and refresh rate/horizontal frequency. If possible try another monitor.

Other possibilities are a hardware problem with the video adapter, video drivers or interference with the video signal. See if you can update the drivers and reorientate the monitor and its cable.

I remember having that problem occasionally years ago, probably with 98 systems. As I recall it turned out to be the monitor.

Hi timsky,

As rightly suggested by "DAVEINCAPS" you may try changing settings and resolution for the display.

Also, you may try connecting a good known monitor to isolate the issue.

Updating the drivers for the video card may fix the issue.

Thanks & Regards

it's not the monitor because H.264 video plays faultlessly, it's only MPEG-2 which has the wavy edges. How do I update the video driver?

If it's a system like Dell or HP you can go to their support site and see if they have updated drivers. If it's a video card you can check the card manufacturer's site. But probably the best place is the video chip/adapter maker's site--ATI, Nvidia, Intel, etc. They will usually be the ones to write new drivers so if any are available they should be on their site.

Have you checked the video settings?
