Various issues after removed viruses

Specs: Windows XP Home
Hi All

Somehow, after years of cautious browsing under AVG (free), I got hit by Vundo, Netsky, CTX and Sheur all at once. Anyway, not happy with AVG, I think I have got rid of them with Avast/Spybot/Ad-aware and Hijack This.

However, I have two odd issues, which I think must be related:
1 - I can only occassionally restart my machine in Safe Mode
2 - Windows Update no longer works - I just get taken to 'IE Cannot Display the Requested Web Page' as if the server is down.

This situation has persisted for about 2 wks now.

I'm particularly concerned about the windows update thing - because either i'm being dumb, or there is still something lurking thats denying me access.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated as ever

That's quite a list you had to use to clean out. While you might still have something, it is equally possible that you now have some corrupt files after the infections were ripped out. Have you tried both manual windows update and setting the schedule for automatic? Have you tried to just go to microsoft's general site and navigate to windows update through there? If you can just download a new copy of the latest IE8, you may then have easier access to update.
I have used Webroot's AntiVirus with SpySweeper for many years now with good results, if you are looking for a good pay for suite and they offer a discount license for 3 or 5 computers if you need.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't tried auto updates, but I hate not being in control of what is/isn't installed so would rather not do this just to see.

Hadn't thought about IE8, though. Not sure where I can download from, but will take a look. May work..!

OK - updated to IE8. No change. Still cannot get the site to respond.

Any other thoughts?
