Specs: Windows XP
Dear Friends,

I have HP pavilion dv 2214tu with windows XP sp3.
I have upgraded my HDD from 120GB to 500 GB. In that 120 GB I am having important files which i want to transfer them to the new 500 GB HDD.
I bought a small equipment which is a sata device conncected to the lappie through USB.
If i connect, the LED burns and HDD runs. But the HDD is not shown any where in the lappie either in the bios or in the Device manager.

Secondly how to transfer files from a sata HDD to IDE HDD?

If anyone help me in this regard i will be much obliged. Also pl send your reply to email ID also.
Thanks and kind regards.

If the adapter is not showing in device manager then it may not be working. Look for the 120 drive in Windows Disk Management. You may just need to take ownership of the files/ folders. Look at the link below to learn how to take ownership if the drive shows up in Disk Management.

You can't transfer your programs unless you clone the old drive to the new one. Other items, like personal files can simply be copied and pasted.

Are you sure your laptop can run a 500GB hard drive?

I just realized you may be transferring from the 120GB inside the laptop to a 500GB externally. If the intent is to install the 500GB into the laptop the interface must be the same type. You can't go from IDE to SATA or vise versa.
